The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage - Panic! at the Disco
And I believe/this may call for a proper introduction, and well/don’t you see/I’m the narrator, and this is just the prologue
An introduction to Mayhem on a meta level to start with: Mayhem sees themself as the narrator of other people’s stories rather than the hero of their own. All they want is to learn and amplify stories that would otherwise go unheard.

Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger
I’m not sick, but I’m not well/and it’s a sin/to live this well
A less meta introduction, this is surface-level Mayhem: the flippant outsider and unreliable narrator of their own experience, having fun, taking nothing seriously, and blatantly lying about their background.

The Anthem - Good Charlotte
Out of step while/they all get in line/I’m just a minor threat/so pay no mind
A taste of how they got like this: rebelliousness, an inherent resistance to conformity, the desire to stay an outsider if it means keeping their freedom.

Shiny Happy People - REM
Put it in your hands/take it, take it/There’s no time to cry/happy, happy
The whole world is full of people pretending to be happy with their lives. Some of them even believe they really are. Mayhem was taught to believe that none of them are correct, and is accordingly very cynical about the truth underlying most cheerful demeanors.

Beneath The Mask - Persona 5 soundtrack
I’m a shapeshifter/have no face to show/please don’t take off my mask/my disguise
Mayhem’s personal identity is still kind of half-formed, and they don’t yet feel fully alive or present in their life. They’re a bystander, at best an echo of something real.

The Sound of Silence - Disturbed
‘Fools,’ said I, ‘you do not know/silence like a cancer grows...’
Having grown up in a joyless place, Mayhem knows better than most the dark weight of silence, in a place where no one sings.

Green Finch and Linnet Bird - Sweeney Todd soundtrack
Green finch and linnet bird, nightingale, blackbird/teach me how to sing!/If I cannot fly/let me sing!
Mayhem was never allowed outside at all for the first thirteen or so years of their life, and even after that it was no more than once or twice a year, under close supervision. All the rest of their life was spent indoors, dreaming of adventure and freedom.

Sit Still, Look Pretty - Daya
That’s where I’m gonna be/because I wanna be/no, I don’t wanna sit still, look pretty
Mayhem was not actually raised as a girl, but was raised to be very passive, speak when spoken to, be a precious obedient trophy/pet and not much else. It’s boring.

The Pretender - Foo Fighters
In time, or so I'm told/I'm just another soul to sell/...Oh, well!
The world is full of liars and pretenders, and Mayhem is very tired of being lied to, being kept ignorant, and dealing with people who only want to engage with their own reality. They soon learned that they never wanted to lose touch with the truth, and to force others to acknowledge it as well when they could.

Everybody Knows - Dixie Chicks
Standing out/so you won’t forget my name/that’s the way we play this game/of life
Social skills take time to learn, and Mayhem was not the best at them when they first left home. The first year or so was a crash-course, aided by the encouragement of the traveling players for Mayhem to put themself out in front of the crowd.

Words As Weapons - Seether
Keep me dumb/keep me paralyzed/Why try swimming?/I'm drowning in fable
Words have been used to twist Mayhem around all their life, but when they got away from home they finally started to understand how that worked and what had been done to them, and began learning how to turn those weapons around on others so that they wouldn’t be vulnerable again.

My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark - Fall Out Boy
In the end, everything collides/my childhood spat back out the monster that you see
Everyone has secrets. Figuring out how to learn them, and then use them, is a way of gaining power and control that Mayhem never had before. And since the world is going to see them as a monster no matter what, they may as well learn to fight back.

We Don’t Belong - Black Veil Brides
They might call me a sinner/a walking flame from the fire that burns/disappear/you don’t belong here
Being a tiefling is hard pretty much anywhere, but especially on the road going from one small town to another.

Entertainment - Rise Against
But this is more than entertainment/in a world so sick with pain/this is the only thing that’s real or true!
Just as they were always taught, the world is sick and broken, twisted and filled full of lies. But there are truths to be told, if you can find a way to get them out there: the irony is that if you pretend to be lying, performing falsehoods, you can say real things that people refuse to hear any other way. The stage provided what they needed.

Be Ok - Ingrid Michaelson
I'm a gallery of broken hearts/I'm beyond repair, let me be/and give me back my broken parts
The first step to putting yourself together is figuring out that you’re broken. Mayhem can’t even be put back together, because that would mean they had to have been whole at some point.

Nowadays - Chicago soundtrack
There's men everywhere/jazz everywhere/booze everywhere/life everywhere/joy everywhere
So it turns out there’s a lot of sensual pleasures in the outside world. Booze is fun, sex is fun, staying out all night and then watching the sunrise while under the influence of questionable pharmaceuticals is fun. As long as you look out for yourself and remember not to actually trust anyone, there is a lot of fun to be had.

Another Hundred People - Company soundtrack
It’s a city of strangers!/Some come to work, some to play!/A city of strangers!/Some come to stare, some to stay!
When Mayhem first came to Waterdeep, they instantly fell in love with a place where they could be around people constantly and yet completely invisible and anonymous, just a single cell in the pulsing, living organism that is a city.

Hard to be the Bard - Something Rotten soundtrack
I make it look easy/but honey, believe me/it’s hard to be the bard!
Mayhem did not quite expect that joining these crazy people in a fight one evening would lead to their life getting so busy. Not that they’re complaining, exactly - things are great, really! - but in their circumstances, fame comes with its own problems...

Try Everything - Shakira
I won’t leave/I wanna try everything!/I wanna try even though I could fail
The outside world is big and scary, but it has so many interesting things, and Mayhem wants to do all of them at least once, even the dangerous ones. Even failure is an interesting new experience, when they spent most of their life insulated from making choices that could lead to mistakes.

The Bard's Song - Van Canto
Now the bards' songs are over and it's time to leave/No one should ask you for the name of the one/who tells the story
And once again, Mayhem doesn't want to be remembered; only the stories they're trying to tell really matter.
